DID YOU KNOW?®
The Little Angel That Became a BIG Collecting Craze — The History of Sonny Angel
Tiny wings. Rosy cheeks. A bare little bottom. And, if you are lucky, a strawberry, rabbit, frog—or something much rarer—sitting on top of his head.
If you have walked into a collectible shop lately and wondered why grown adults are eagerly opening tiny mystery boxes containing little cherub babies, welcome to the wonderfully strange world of Sonny Angel.
But here is the surprising part:
Sonny Angel isn’t new.
Long before the current blind-box craze exploded across TikTok and Instagram, this little Japanese angel was already quietly building a following.
So where did Sonny Angel come from? How many have been made? What is the difference between an “unrefined” and “refined” Sonny? And why can a tiny figure originally purchased for around the price of lunch suddenly sell for hundreds of dollars?
Grab your magnifying glass. 🔎
We’re going down the Sonny Angel rabbit hole.
👼 It All Started in Japan
Sonny Angel was created by Japanese company Dreams Inc., a Tokyo-based company established in 1996. Dreams develops and wholesales novelty, interior and lifestyle products and is headed by managing director Toru Soeya.
Sonny Angel officially celebrates his birthday on May 15, 2004.
But the first Sonny looked quite different from the tiny blind-box figure collectors chase today.
The original was an approximately 18-centimeter—or about 7-inch—wide-eyed doll.
It wasn’t until 2005 that Dreams transformed Sonny into the miniature collectible format that would ultimately make him famous.
The first mini-figure collection was:
🐘 Animal Series Version 1
Instead of changing the character itself, Dreams created an incredibly simple collecting concept:
Keep the same little angel…
and change his hat.
Animals, fruit, vegetables, flowers, sweets, sea creatures and eventually hundreds of increasingly imaginative designs followed.
According to Dreams, more than 1,300 different Sonny Angel figures have been created, and the character is now sold in 33 countries.
Even more impressive, the official 20th Anniversary Sonny Angel guide published in 2025 documented 1,482 Sonny Angel products from the brand’s first two decades.
One historical detail needs a little caution. Dreams confirms that Sonny Angel was born in Japan in 2004, followed by the first miniature Animal Series in 2005, but the company’s publicly available history does not identify one specific store as the first retail location. So claims online naming a particular shop as the “first Sonny Angel store” should be treated cautiously unless documentation surfaces.
🎁 Then Came the Blind Box
This may have been one of the smartest decisions Dreams made.
Sonny Angels are sold primarily in blind boxes.
You see the possible characters pictured on the package…
but you don’t know which one is inside.
Most regular Sonny Angel series contain 12 standard figures, but Dreams adds another layer of collecting temptation:
✨ Secret Figures
A secret is a design that isn’t part of the ordinary assortment shown as the standard lineup.
Then there is another little character collectors hope to find:
🐭 Robby Angel
Robby is Sonny’s tiny companion and often appears in colors or designs coordinating with a particular collection.
Dreams has even produced extraordinarily limited figures with editions of only 10, 50 or 100 pieces.
And suddenly opening a $10–$15-ish collectible doesn’t feel quite the same.
You might be opening the common figure.
Or…
you might have just pulled the one everybody wants.
🍓 How Many Sonny Angel Series Are There?
This is where things get complicated.
There isn’t one permanent number because Dreams continually releases, retires, redesigns and adds collections.
As of 2026, the official catalog has 10 current regular themed series:
Animal Series 1
Animal Series 2
Animal Series 3
Animal Series 4
Fruit Series
Vegetable Series
Flower Series
Marine Series
Sweets Series
Snack Series
Most contain 12 regular designs.
But that is only the beginning.
Over the years Dreams has released dozens of limited and seasonal collections, including Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Cherry Blossom, Circus, Cat Life, Dinosaur, Dog Time, Home Sweet Home, Wonderland, Japanese Good Luck, New York, Summer Vacation, Strawberry Love and many others.
There are also collaboration collections, anniversary figures, regional releases and Artist Collection pieces.
And then Sonny learned to climb onto our phones.
📱 Meet HIPPERS
In 2021, Dreams introduced another format that helped bring Sonny Angel to an entirely new audience:
HIPPERS.
Instead of standing on a shelf, HIPPERS attach to objects so Sonny appears to be peeking over them.
Collectors began sticking them onto:
📱 Phones
💻 Laptops
🖥️ Computer monitors
🪞 Mirrors
🪴 Planters
📚 Shelves
HIPPERS have since appeared in multiple versions, including the original HIPPERS, Harvest, Dreaming, Looking Back and Cherry Blossom collections.
They also happened to be perfect for social media.
And that would become very important.
🔎 UNREFINED vs. REFINED — What’s the Difference?
This is one of the most confusing subjects for new Sonny Angel collectors.
An older Sonny that looks slightly different is not automatically fake.
Collectors commonly call earlier figures:
UNREFINED
In 2018, Dreams officially announced that Sonny Angel was being “refined.”
The company’s concept was:
“Small Difference, More Happiness.”
Dreams initially updated Animal Series 1–4 and later incorporated the newer appearance across additional collections.
The changes were subtle rather than a completely new character.
Collectors may notice differences in:
• facial proportions
• eye placement and appearance
• head shape
• body proportions
• sculpt consistency
• paint and finishing
That means two authentic Sonny Angels from different eras can sit side-by-side and not look identical.
Older pre-refinement examples can have their own collector appeal precisely because they represent an earlier generation of production.
So remember:
Different doesn’t necessarily mean fake.
Sometimes different means older.
📈 So Why Did Sonny Angel Suddenly Become HUGE?
Sonny Angel spent almost two decades building a following before becoming a social-media phenomenon.
Then the perfect storm arrived.
Blind-box collecting became increasingly popular, while TikTok and Instagram turned the simple act of opening a collectible into entertainment.
Sonny Angel was practically designed for it.
Buy the box.
Shake the box.
Open the foil.
Reveal the Sonny.
Celebrate—or immediately start looking for someone willing to trade.
By 2023 and 2024, American retailers were reporting dramatic increases in demand. Fortune reported in 2024 that authorized U.S. sellers were experiencing shortages and purchase limits as Sonny Angels surged on social media.
The phenomenon also created something vintage dealers know very well:
scarcity + nostalgia + community + the thrill of the hunt.
Trading events developed. Collector groups appeared. Displays became increasingly elaborate. Social-media creators showed hundreds of figures at a time.
Sonny Angel had transformed from a cute Japanese novelty into a legitimate international collecting category.
And whenever a collecting category explodes…
the rare pieces follow.
💰 Which Sonny Angels Are Valuable?
This is where collectors need to be careful.
Asking price is NOT market value.
Someone listing a Sonny Angel for $1,000 does not mean someone actually paid $1,000 for it.
Actual value depends heavily on the specific figure, rarity, series, age, condition, packaging and current collector demand.
Generally, the strongest premiums tend to appear among:
✨ Secret figures
🐭 Robby figures
🏆 Extremely limited editions
🎪 Retired limited collections
👼 Early/unrefined figures
🤝 Desirable collaborations
🌎 Regional or event exclusives
Recent sold-market examples illustrate how dramatic the difference can be.
A Secret Chef from the Sweets Series sold on eBay for about $175.
A Cherry Blossom Pink Robby sold for approximately $250.
A rare 2018 Summer Series Robby sold for $400.
And a 2026 Strawberry Love Secret Strawberry Jam + Robby set sold for approximately $399.99.
Those aren’t ordinary Sonny Angels.
They demonstrate what can happen when rarity and collector demand collide.
There are also early, discontinued and exceptionally scarce Sonny Angels that sellers ask substantially more for, but collectors should always distinguish an active listing from a verified sale.
🇺🇸 WHERE SHOULD YOU BUY REAL SONNY ANGELS IN THE UNITED STATES?
This may be the most important part of this entire article.
Counterfeit Sonny Angels have become a serious problem.
In February 2026, Dreams issued another warning that exact-replica counterfeit Sonny Angel products were circulating in the market. The company said it had taken legal action connected with counterfeit manufacturing in China in 2025.
Dreams’ advice is straightforward:
Purchase from authorized retailers.
For U.S. collectors, the safest starting point is the official Sonny Angel USA Store.
Collectors can also use the official Sonny Angel Store Locator or the Sonny Angel USA app, which includes an authorized retailer search.
This is especially important because a store simply advertising something as “authentic” does not make it an authorized Sonny Angel dealer.
Dreams specifically warns that products purchased through unauthorized sellers cannot be guaranteed authentic.
🚨 HOW DO YOU SPOT A POSSIBLE FAKE?
Counterfeits are becoming increasingly convincing, so there isn’t one magical test.
Start with the seller.
If the retailer doesn’t appear on the authorized retailer list, investigate before purchasing.
Then examine the figure itself.
Collectors should look carefully at:
The markings: Authentic figures generally have Dreams/Sonny Angel manufacturing information molded or stamped on the feet. Remember that markings and dates can differ among generations.
The paint: Sloppy eyes, strange skin tones, unusually glossy surfaces or poorly aligned facial features deserve a closer look.
The sculpt: Compare the face, ears, wings, hands, feet and headgear with documented authentic examples from the same series.
The packaging: Compare fonts, logos, colors, copyright information and print quality with official examples.
And perhaps most importantly…
Don’t declare an older Sonny fake simply because it doesn’t look like your brand-new one.
You may be comparing an unrefined Sonny with a refined Sonny.
🕵️ THE VINTAGE SHACK® COLLECTOR TIP
When buying a Sonny Angel on the secondary market, don’t begin by asking:
“How much is it worth?”
Begin by asking:
“Exactly what do I have?”
Identify the series.
Identify the year or production era.
Determine whether it is refined or unrefined.
Find out whether it was regular, secret, Robby, limited, collaboration or event exclusive.
Check the markings.
Check the condition.
Check whether the original box and packaging survive.
Then—and only then—look at recent SOLD examples, not simply asking prices.
Because the tiny angel sitting at a garage sale for a few dollars could be an ordinary Sonny…
or he could be an older discontinued figure that a collector has been hunting for years.
And THAT is what makes collecting fun.
🔎 Look closely. Research twice. Buy carefully.
Because in today’s collecting world, even a three-inch angel can have a surprisingly big story.
Give the Gift of History.
