ANTIQUE MARKET I — ST. CHARLES, ILLINOIS
Some antique malls are new, enormous and constantly changing.
And then there are places that seem to have become antiques themselves. ❤️
Tucked away in downtown St. Charles, Illinois, is one of those increasingly uncommon places: Antique Market I.
This isn’t a trendy vintage market that appeared during the recent resurgence in secondhand shopping. Market I has been part of the local antique scene for more than four decades.
So before we go treasure hunting, let’s start with its history.
🕰️ OVER FOUR DECADES OF ANTIQUES
Antique Market I traces its history to 1982, which means this little St. Charles institution has been operating for approximately 44 years.
And perhaps even more remarkable—it has remained in the same tucked-away location under longtime ownership for decades.
Historical antique-industry advertising tells us something else interesting.
An AntiqueWeek Guide to Shops & Malls documented Antique Market I as:
“20 Dealers — Celebrating 30 Years! — In Business Since 1982.”
Today, Market I still describes itself as a cooperative of approximately 20 experienced antique dealers.
Think about that for a moment.
While enormous antique malls have opened, closed, expanded and changed ownership, this small antique market has quietly remained in St. Charles for more than four decades.
And many of the dealers aren’t newcomers either.
Vendor turnover here appears to be remarkably low.
In fact, during my visit, one vendor jokingly told me:
“In order to become a vendor here, you have to be collecting Social Security.” 😂
Of course, it was said in humor, but there is actually something rather special behind that joke.
These are seasoned antique dealers and longtime collectors.
And that experience is reflected in what you’ll find inside.
🏚️ FIRST YOU HAVE TO FIND IT!
Market I isn’t sitting inside a sprawling shopping center with an enormous glowing ANTIQUES sign beckoning from the highway.
The storefront is tucked into a small, tight downtown location.
It can almost feel hidden.
And strangely enough?
That adds to its charm.
There is something very old-school about finding a little antique shop that’s been quietly sitting in the same place for decades.
You almost feel like you’ve discovered a secret.
Then you open the door…
And the treasure hunt begins.
😍 GLASS, GLASS AND MORE GLASS!
One of the first things encountered upon entering is a booth filled with vintage and antique glass.
And that immediately tells you what kind of antique mall you’ve walked into.
This is not a store filled primarily with new décor made to look old.
The emphasis here is on ANTIQUES, with some vintage mixed throughout.
Glassware.
China.
Jewelry.
Pottery.
Furniture.
Lighting.
Artwork.
Books.
Coins and currency.
Military collectibles.
Vintage clothing.
Barware.
Primitives.
Figurines.
And plenty of things that aren’t quite so easy to categorize.
This is the type of inventory that makes a collector slow down.
🔎 YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO DIG!
Now comes the fun part.
Market I is PACKED.
And when I say packed…
I mean PACKED. 😂
The aisles are narrow.
The shelves are full.
The cases are full.
There are items sitting in front of other items.
There are treasures hiding behind other treasures.
This isn’t an antique mall where you can stand in the aisle, glance into a beautifully staged booth and decide within five seconds whether you want to enter.
You need to actually hunt.
Look behind the vase.
Look underneath the bowl.
Look toward the back of the shelf.
Look up.
Look down.
And when you think you’ve seen everything…
look again.
Because there is a very good chance you missed something.
For a true treasure hunter, that’s part of the experience.
💎 THIS IS A COLLECTOR’S KIND OF ANTIQUE MALL
This was probably my favorite thing about Market I.
There are uncommon pieces here.
During a time when many antique malls are becoming a mixture of antiques, vintage, reproductions, handmade merchandise and newly manufactured home décor, Market I still feels like a place built around collecting.
You can encounter everything from antique and vintage glass to:
✨ Vintage Chanel
✨ Antique chandeliers
✨ Unusual artwork
✨ Statement lighting
✨ Fine decorative objects
✨ Furniture
✨ Jewelry
✨ One-of-a-kind collectibles
And every so often, you encounter one of those pieces that makes you stop walking.
“Wait…WHAT is that?” 👀
Those are the moments collectors live for.
If you’re searching for the same collectibles you see in every antique mall, you’ll certainly find some of them here.
But the real attraction is the possibility of finding something you don’t see everywhere else.
💰 LET’S TALK ABOUT THE PRICES
Pricing at Market I is interesting because it covers a rather large spectrum.
Some pieces fall comfortably into what I would consider mid-level antique retail pricing.
And others?
Well…
Let’s call those museum prices. 😂
There are pieces where you may pick up the tag and immediately put it back down.
But there are also genuinely uncommon antiques here.
These are experienced dealers, and in many cases, they know exactly what they have.
With approximately 20 individual dealers represented, pricing naturally varies considerably.
One booth may seem expensive.
The next may be surprisingly reasonable.
So don’t allow one price tag to determine your opinion of the entire market.
Keep hunting.
👜 WORD OF ADVICE: LEAVE THE BIG BAG BEHIND
Now we need to discuss the elephant in the very narrow aisle.
SPACE.
😂
If you’re planning a visit, I would strongly recommend leaving oversized purses, totes and backpacks behind.
The aisles are tight.
There is merchandise everywhere.
And much of that merchandise is breakable.
Turning around with a giant tote bag while surrounded by shelves of antique glass is not the kind of excitement anyone needs.
One accidental bump could potentially send something toppling.
And because there isn’t a tremendous amount of open space, once you begin buying, you may find yourself carrying your treasures in your hands and arms while continuing to shop.
That became the biggest drawback of my visit.
👴 THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE ANTIQUES
One of the things I enjoyed most was interacting with the owner.
He was kind, helpful and willing to share additional historical information about the treasures in the store.
That matters.
There is a tremendous difference between someone who simply sells an old object and someone who understands what that object is, where it came from and why it matters.
Longtime antique dealers carry decades of knowledge.
Manufacturers.
Patterns.
Periods.
Materials.
Designers.
Provenance.
And sometimes the stories of the collectors who owned these objects before us.
When an owner is willing to share that knowledge, antique shopping becomes more than buying.
It becomes education.
And that is something I will always appreciate.
❤️ WHO WOULD LOVE MARKET I?
If you enjoy huge, brightly lit antique malls with wide aisles and perfectly staged booths, Market I may feel overwhelming.
But if you’re the collector who enjoys digging through shelves…
If you don’t mind moving something carefully to see what’s hiding behind it…
If you’d rather find one extraordinary antique than leave with ten ordinary pieces…
This may be your kind of place.
Market I feels less like today’s modern antique-mall experience and more like the antique shops many of us remember from years ago.
Crowded.
Quirky.
Knowledgeable.
Unpredictable.
And filled with history.
It isn’t polished.
It is a treasure hunt.

After more than four decades in business, Antique Market I has managed to retain something that is becoming increasingly difficult to find:
An old-school antique shopping experience centered around actual antiques and longtime collectors.
The merchandise was fascinating.
The selection contained genuinely uncommon pieces.
The owner was kind and knowledgeable.
And the experience reminded me why collectors enjoy digging through antique shops in the first place.
So what kept it from receiving five stars?
The tight quarters.
The narrow aisles, heavily stocked shelves and limited room for carrying purchases make browsing somewhat challenging.
Large bags are definitely not recommended, and shoppers with mobility concerns may find navigating the space difficult.
For the overall shopping experience, I give:

4 OUT OF 5 STARS
Take away the space limitations and this is a fascinating little antique destination.
But when it comes strictly to the quality and uniqueness of the antiques?
Market I is a collector’s paradise.
This isn’t the place I would necessarily choose if my goal were simply to fill a cart with inexpensive resale inventory.
This is where I would go looking for that one piece.
The one you haven’t seen in years.
The one you didn’t know existed.
Or perhaps…
the one hiding behind three other things on the back of the shelf. 🔎😂
